According to the person with disabilities (equal opportunity, protection of rights and full participation) Act 1995.

Disability means

·           Blindness     

·            Low vision

·            Leprosy

·            Hearing impairment

·            Locomotors disability

·            Mental retardation

·            Mental illness

Hearing impairment means loss of 60 decibel or more in the better ear in the conversational range of frequency. 

 

The hearing impairments can further be classified into four categories.

According to World Health Organization (WHO): -

• Mild – hearing loss with distance of one meter falling in the group of 26- 40 decibels.

•  Moderate- Hearing loss falling in the group of 41- 60 decibels.

•   Severe- Hearing loss falling in the group of 61- 80 decibels.

  Profound- Hearing loss of 81 decibel and above.
